2.BACKGROUND
Asthma comes from the ancient Greek word meaning, “panting”. Asthma is a unhealthiness of the airways leading to the lungs. In an asthmatic glide slope the immune system overreacts to the presence of external agents and the bronchial tubes which marry the throat to the lungs become inflamed, excessive mucous is produced and it constricts. As a result the person struggles to breathe freely as they ar deprived of sufficient air to their lungs. For some, an asthma attack feels as though an elephant is sitting on their chest, whilst for others breathing becomes so profound that it’s like trying to suck peanut cover through a straw.
The prevalence of asthma has increased steadily over the last 20 to 30 years. This respiratory disease has had a profound effect on human surgical process and could be a threat to upcoming economies, as asthma medicines put a great burden on the national health system. An asthma attack could be fatal to anyone not knowledgeable about the subject.
Factors such as air pollution, pollens, mites, clay and genetic factors are among major causes of asthma seem to be increasing worldwide. Although there are many factors that can sum up to triggering asthma, the research will be focused specifically on air pollution in Richards Bay and the effect of air pollution triggering asthma.
