Faith Bandler is a renowned Aboriginal activist who was instrumental in the 1967 referendum. Born in Tumbulgum, she was deeply influenced by her father who had experienced, root hand, life as a slave plantation worker. He died when Faith was 5. In 1967 she brought the referendum before the Holt government and the change was duly made to the constitution after it successfully gained a 91% majority vote.





Her speech Hope, Faith and Reconciliation, was given in response to an invitation from the Indigenous people of the Illawarra to speak at a convention. Her themes throughout the speech were unity and justice, not only amidst Aboriginal people, but all decent people who scan the past, the terrible indignities. Her aim was to promote and inspire reconciliation. Her speech, presented to a reactive audience, was typified by the use of informal expression, the use of ellipsis and pronouns.
