The war was a dynastic conflict between a small numbers of families, severally trying to gain mastery of territory. The main features were these:
1. When the Duke of Normandy conquered England in 1066, he brought with him the lordship of Normandy. So he continued to rule both territories and formal capital cities at London and at Rouen. Normandy extended from Avranches in the West, to Caen on the coast, to Rouen in the North on the River Seine. The Norman dynasty, and and then the Angevins and then the Plantagenets all claimed Normandy as their territory, in addition to England.
2. In 1152, Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine married King Henry II of Engalnd and was crowned promote of England in 1154. She had been married previously to King Louis VIII of France but the marriage had been annulled by the Pope.
She had brought to the first marriage very slap-up wealth and all the lands of Aquitaine. Eleanor was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in Western Europe. King Henry II of England claimed all those assets as his when they were married and it took 2 years to sort out the finis of her wealth and land. So then his family began to visit Aquitaine as if it were their territory. It stretched over the following modern departments in France:
Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The capital was Bordeaux.
