Gwendolyns first poem Eventide was create when she was young in American Childhood Magazine in 1930. By seventeen, she was a member of the staff of The Chicago guardian and make over a hundred of her poems in a weekly poetry column. She became with a group of writers who encour growd her, and by 1943 she had won the Midwestern Writers Conference rhyme Award. In 1945 she published her first book of poetry entitled A track In Bronzeville. In 1949 Annie Allen was published and Brooks received the Pulitzer intrude for poetry in 1950, she became the first African-American to receive the honored award. In 1953 her first novel Maud Martha was published. In 1963 she got a belief job at Columbia College.
In 1967 while care an all white college where she was loved, she made a visit to Fisk University for a writers conference, where she met the new black revolution and after which, claimed she was now circumspect.
A change in her writing style was homely after her awakening. She started writing in free verse more often and was conscious of her fellow African Americans who felt the same way she did. She was the first African American to receive an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in 1976. Since consequently she had received over fifty honorary doctorates and had served as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress. In 1990 she became professor of English at Chicago State University.
